Chi-town Trip and other random updates

I haven’t posted anything in a while, so I guess I have a little catching up to do.

New Year, New Life:
2009 started off as a pretty bad year; however, by the end, things were way better off then I had anticipated. My private life took a severe beating, but I’m happier to have certain negative people out of my life for good. The events that took place really showed the true colors of many of my friends and family, as Greg’s main goal was to drive a wedge between me and them.  Furthermore, he worked (and still is working) really hard at doing just that. Unfortunately for me, one of my friends was too short-sighted and obtuse to see through his manipulative ways, and we are no longer friends. However, my true friends and family stuck by me through those tough times and I am really thankful for that and thankful to still have them in my life.  I am just glad to be done with all of that and to have moved on to better things.

New Goals:
A few years ago, I started taking classes towards getting my Master’s degree. As part of my degree, I really wanted to do some-kind of study abroad experience, but I wasn’t sure if that would be possible and it kind of seemed like a pipe dream at the time. Well, I’m almost finished with my degree, so it became a "now or never" decision to decide if I wanted to try to study abroad. So, I chose to take the plunge and I am organizing a study abroad trip for myself during the summer of 2010. I don’t have all the logistics worked out as of yet, but I’m planning on studying at a university in Prague, Czech Republic for about 10 weeks. I’m going to be taking a leave of absence from work in order to go to school and work part-time in Prague. I’m completely freaked out, but at the same time I’m excited to (hopefully) be able to do this. At this point, I’m playing the waiting game, as I’m waiting to hear back from the Prague University about my acceptance and job. As soon as all that goes through, then I should have some more information to move forward with. But until that happens, I am nervously waiting.  So, if you happen to be traveling to Europe over the summer, stop and visit me in Prague! :)

Chicago:
Over Christmas break, me and Gar went to Chicago for a few days just to get away from everyone and everything.  Upon arriving in the city, we thought it would be cool to visit the Science and Industry Museum, since I hadn't been there since my 12th grade Physics Trip.  Anywho, when we got there we discovered that the entire city of Chicago had decided that the only place to take their kids to release built-up Christmas-break engery, was to take them to the Museum.  So, after fighting through a mob of people and their kids to get in, we enthusiastically charged thru the museum exhibits. Needless to say, it was mostly hands-on exhibits, which we weren’t too thrilled about and we finished the whole museum in about 2 hours. The only really cool exhibit they had was the Plastic Human bodies display. They take real people and pump some kind of plasticizer in them so it preserves the tissues and everything. Why I have to like all the creepy things, I just don’t know.

After the museum, we took the L into North Chicago and we hung out at this little German Restaurant / Bar for dinner and drinks.  There was this guy playing German / Polka music all night and the place was full of older, German folks.  It was awesome.

The next day, we wandered up to the Lincoln Park Zoo.  Over the holidays, they have the whole zoo decorated with Christmas lights, so it was really pretty to see.  Overall, the zoo was really fun and since it was negative 50 in Chicago at the time, we didn't have to worry about crowds.   My favorite was the wolves.  A tiny part of me was expecting them to suddenly morf into hot, shirtless, brown-skined, 20-something year old guys, but no such luck.  My least favorite was the monkeys.  Those things are just a little too human-like and creepy for me to handle.

Fast-forward to last weekend...We went out to Grand Haven to check out the ice/snow at the beach and on the pier.  It always looks so amazing in the winter....only 5 more short months before it's sunny and 80 degrees here! /sigh
